The Implications of de and jen: Medical Decision-Making from the Perspective of The Analects

Abstract

|
In Korea, it is common for a patient`s family members to attempt to intervene in the patient`s medical decision-making. While some see this as a violation of patient autonomy, it can be useful in some cases for family members to attempt to help the patient make decisions. In order to create and implement effective policies concerning medical decision-making in the Korean context, a Confucian ethical perspective must be considered. Accordingly, this article examines the concepts of jen (humaneness) and de (virtue) that are found in The Analects and shows how those concepts affect the understanding and practice of medical decision-making. It is also shown that, in the context of Confucian ethics, a person (人) is an autonomous but also relational being
